US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned

President Donald Trump on Sunday 7 April (US time) announced the Homeland Security Minister Kirstjen Nielsen "will leave his position" after 16 months. On the same day, Nielsen also said that she would leave office immediately.


In a tweet posted on Sunday afternoon (April 7), Mr. Trump wrote: "Homeland Security Minister Kirstjen Nielsen will leave her position and I want to thank her for her dedication."
In another tweet, Mr. Trump said Kevin McAleenan - head of the US Customs and Border Protection Agency, would become interim Secretary of Homeland Security.
"I am confident that Kevin will do a good job!" Mr. Trump tweeted.
Kirstjen Nielsen, 46, was appointed by Mr. Trump as Homeland Security Secretary in December 2017 after General John Kelly moved to the Chief of the White House.
Nielsen is famous as the protector of President Trump's policies and is said to be a "lightning rod" that draws criticism from the opposition to the Republican president's border security policy.
In the resignation letter to Mr. Trump, Nielsen wrote: “Despite our advances in domestic security reform for a new era, I have decided that this is the right time for me. step aside. ”
“It is an honor to have time to work with brave men and women of the Department of Homeland Security,” Nielsen tweeted Sunday evening (April 7).
Nielsen's departure was announced two days after President Trump suddenly announced that he had removed the appointment of Ronald Vitiello as head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE is a unit under the Department of Homeland Security.
Fox News cited sources from Trump administration saying that the withdrawal of Mr Vitiello's appointment was the first step in Mr. Trump's plan to control the southwestern border crisis. The second step of this plan is to ask Mrs. Nielsen to resign.

According to Fox News, before the Nielsen resignation information was announced, the female minister met Mr. Trump at the White House. The Associated Press, which cited two unnamed sources, said Ms Nielsen was disappointed with the difficulties of helping other departments address the growing number of illegal cross-border families. male.
